Between old villages and shrines

A pleasant Sunday trip for the sporty ones. A considerable elevation gain is balanced by technically easy paths: mountain roads, paved streets and some nice mountain trails. Do not expect classic touristy spots: if you’re looking for authenticity, you’re in the right place. We recommend to stop by from time to time to catch a glimpse of some stunning panoramas.

Gaverina Terme

A little borrough on the hills, divided into 4 districts: Trate, Gaverina, Piano and Fonti. Cycling through them is like time travelling, between small “piazze”, old churches and an abandoned thermal centre. This area is full of springs, whose water has surprisingly beneficial effects on health. Therefore, the Gaverina water company was founded in 1890 and is still working.

Valle del Lujo

Overcoming Colle Gallo, where you can visit the shrine dedicated to Madonna dei Ciclisti (Saint Mary of Cyclists, in English), you find yourselves in Valle del Lujo, in the district of Casale, Albino. The village warms you with its old and authentic athmosfere, with its ancient rocky houses and its little church, you are suddenly gifted with rare silence. From here you take the Castagni trail, which grabs its name from the abundance of chestnut trees (“castagni”, in Italian). In autumn, during festivals, you can taste the local “biligocc’”, a variety of chestnuts.

Mount Misma

We are heading now to Mount Misma, one of the most popular mountains for locals, located right between Val Cavallina and Val Seriana. Once you’re arrived at Prati Alti, stop for a sip of water and enjoy a wonderful view of the two valleys! Then, restart your trip for the last short trail until Madonna di Misma, a romanesque shrine with a chalet inside. Here starts your way down to the village of Luzzana. Through the cycling path, all along the riverside, you are back to the point of departure.
